The Basket Bet - any advantage?
« on: June 10, 2017, 10:59:35 PM »
In American Roulette, all bets have a house edge of 5.3%, except one....the basket bet is when one wager is made that covers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3.  The basket bet has a house edge of 7.9%!

Now you could cover those same numbers individually and get the HE back to 5.3%.  In other words, you should never play the basket bet.

But I was wondering, is there anyway we could take advantage of the difference in payoff with this wager.  Any arbitrage opportunity here?

Hi Scar.....
I've used the basket in the casino, but sparingly. I occasionally bet it for 1 or 2 pops now and then in lieu of a double street since it pays 6 as opposed to 5. But, I don't bet it repeatedly, as you mentioned....that 7.89% edge will eat you up. Some pundits like John Patrick have stated they use it as a "utility" bet, being a small part of a larger bet selection scheme.

It would be nice if we could use something like the parrondo's paradox....where alteenating between two negative expectation games result in a positI've expectation

You cant do anything smart with the basket bet and it should never be played.
